Sorry for the pun, we just couldn't resist. But it's also a fact. For the third year in a row, the DC area was ranked as America's fittest city by the American Fitness Index (AFI). And you just know we can't resist a good competition!

They have a mind-numbing equation for calculating the scores, but the factors that contributed to DC's high ranking were, among others:

  • Higher percent of city land area as parkland
  • Higher percent using public transportation to work
  • More park units per capita
  • More swimming pools per capita
  • Higher park-related expenditures per capita
  • More farmers’ markets per capita
  • Lower death rate for diabetes
  • Lower percent with angina or coronary heart disease
  • Higher percent bicycling or walking to work

Download the full report for the complete list of strengths that lead to DC's high ranking.

The AFI ranks the top 50 metropolitan areas. The others in the top 5 are:

  • Boston/Cambridge
  • Minneapolis/St. Paul
  • Seattle/Tacoma
  • Portland/Vancouver

Where did your city rank?
