The surprising truth behind cash incentives and motivation

The latest installment in our series on motivation here on the FitFeud blog is a bit of a curve ball. Daniel Pink wrote a book called, Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us, which, as the title suggests, challenges long-held beliefs about motivation.

In a nutshell, he says that the typical carrot/stick approach that most businesses use to motivate their workforces does not work in the new knowledge economy. He references study after study which show that cash incentives - are you ready for this - actually reduce performance for cognitive tasks.

I know, it's a bit counter-intuitive. But don't take my word for it. Listen to Mr. Pink explain it in much more detail himself. There's a version of this talk that Daniel gave at the Ted conference in 2009, but I recently ran across this interesting animated version. Enjoy.
